Pride and uncensored excitement was shared amongst the marching band when they received the score from their second competition.
The marching band scored an 80.4 out of 100 receiving their highest score of the season at a competition in Clarkston. The band also won three caption awards which resulted in a first place win in their flight.
“They have done really well,” says Band Director Lisa Volz.
In addition, the marching band scored of 79.2 out of 100 at their first competition, taking first place for their flight and earning two out of three caption awards for music and visual.
A flight in marching band is how schools are categorized in competitions based off of the size of the school’s student population. The South Lake marching band falls into flight four along with schools comparative in size. Bands may also be awarded caption awards when they excel in a particular aspect of a show. The three categories for caption awards are music, visual, and general effect.
Spirits are high among members of the band.
“We are off to a good start,” says Jessica Duncan ‘15.
Sophomore Sydney Olszewski agrees. “We have been doing really good this season and I am happy with the results from our last competitions,” said Olszewski.
Both Duncan and Olszewski believe the band’s success is due to the amount of meticulous practice put in to make their performances near perfect. “I feel like everyday at practice, we work hard and put in the effort to perform a good show,” says Olszewski.
“I’m trying to get them hyped up and excited about performing,” says Volz about preparing for States.
Volz hopes that all of the effort and practice they have put in will pay off when they go to States on November first.
