When attending one of the recent football games at the A-Field, students and staff may notice something odd about the team kicker. What you are seeing is that player, number 16, has a ponytail falling out the back of her helmet. That is because the kicker for the boys varsity football team is a girl. Her name is Sydney Pelt.

“Well, I saw a couple of girls kicking soccer balls at the A field,” said coach Roland Bell, “I approached them and asked them if they’d be interested in kicking for the team. And Sydney decided to do it.”

Sydney Pelt kicked off the first two football games after being recruited to the team over the summer.

“Shes a great kicker!” said Martell Pettaway. Pettaway is number five and the running back for the team. Pettaway said he thinks having a girl football player is awesome and that other girls should try out too.

“At first it was kind of awkward between me and the boys,” said Pelt. “and then they got to know me more and now they’re like my family.” Pelt added that she feels empowered to be a woman who can go into a mans sport and perform just as well.

Pelt also said she was a little nervous in the beginning, but she wasn’t the only one. “Oh absolutely we were nervous,” said Pelt’s mother Tina Pelt, “but we were mostly excited for her!”

Pelt claims that she may be number 16 on the field, but she’s number one in the heart of her fans.

Students and staff will continue to root for Sydney as she continues to overcome hurdles both on and off the field.
