After a particularly difficult season, the marching band pulled off a feat that had not been accomplished in eight years and scored a 70 at the Michigan Competing Band Association [MCBA] Competition, making them eleventh in the state.

The marching band, after qualifying for states in the regular season, traveled to Ford Field on Saturday to compete against 12 other schools from across the state.

“For us, the 70 was a massive hump we had been trying to get over for the past four years. To finally achieve it was amazing,” said Band Director Joseph Verbeke. “Every competition was an improvement over the last one…overall it’s been really, really positive.” Verbeke added that the hard work and ethic of the band got them through the season.

The band did not start the season as a contender for states, but that didn’t stop anybody from working harder, especially Senior and Drum Major Matt Forsgren.

“We started off horribly, we got low scores and no one was proud of it,” said Forsgren, “but everybody worked harder and harder every time and we ended up having a really great season.”

With the season over, and the band’s place in this school’s history set in stone, Senior Band Member Bonnie Holmes reflected on how states and her last band season went.

“I have never been more proud of a group of people in my life,” said Holmes. “The determination, positivity, and passion I saw from each and every band member was amazing. “
